Writing in today's Sunday Tribune, Ken Foxe produces a misleading article about Sean Dunne.
Here's the original NY Times Article. Here's the one written by Mr. Foxe.
Here are the inaccuracies I picked up on one reading of the Tribune article:
1. The original text is in the New York Times, not the Tribune, see here (subscription required): http://tinyurl.com/9zfe2m
2. The direct quote beginning "The Celtic Tiger..." is confabulated. Given that this is the main support of your story, it would seem more prudent to report what Mr. Dunne actually said in this instance, without breaking the quote".
3. The quote "He is perhaps on his sixth pint".. should read "He is perhaps on his fifth pint" (my emphasis).
How could Mr. Foxe misquote this, if not deliberately?
4 & 5. The next two quotes are in quotation marks, implying a direct quote, but are in fact snippets of two other direct quotes without ellipsis, thus misleading the reader.
I'm no fan of Mr. Dunne, but simple copy and paste mistakes don't make an article this misleading. I've written to the Tribune, let's see if anything in the story changes. I wonder if Dunne upset someone at the Tribune once upon a time?
